Be Prepared for Emergencies and Disasters
The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends three steps that can help citizens be prepared before an emergency occurs.
1. Get a kit. When preparing for an emergency, think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth. The basics your kit should contain are water, food, flashlight and batteries, first aid kit, and dust masks.
2. Make a plan. Identify an out-of town contact so all family members can communicate if separated. Be sure your family knows the emergency phone number and that all family members have a prepaid phone card to call the emergency contact. Teach your family members how to use text messaging. Text messages can often get around network and cell tower disruptions. And subscribe to local alert services.
3. Be informed. Learn more about the potential emergencies that could happen where you live and the appropriate ways to respond. In addition, learn about the emergency plans that are established in your area by state and local governments.
