Objectives
The objectives of the Community Service Committee (CSC) are to enhance community outreach with the public at large by promoting volunteerism and provide a clearinghouse function to direct the federal community to volunteer activities of member departments and agencies. Their initiatives and events include conducting annual blood drives, welfare-to-work clothing drives, collecting books for schools, and promoting the principal-for-a-day program.
Mission Statement
The Community Service Committee is charged with the responsibility to enhance community outreach with the public-at-large by promoting volunteerism, civic engagement and providing a clearinghouse function to direct the Federal community to volunteer activities of member departments and agencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
The CSC accomplishes its mission by offering opportunities for Federal employees to support local agencies and individuals through various initiatives. The CSC aims to sponsor one event per month, with several occurring on a predictable annual basis. Examples include blood drives, clothing drives and volunteer events. The CSC will also maintain volunteer links for federal employees and agencies to facilitate finding additional opportunities for federal employees to offer their time and donations. The CSC page on the Chicago FEB website – www.Chicago.FEB.gov - lists numerous web links to national and local service organizations. The results of all CSC-sponsored events are to be tabulated and reported to the FEB Executive Director. The CSC may not partake in any events that involve fundraising in the workplace as that is the role of the Combined Federal Campaign.
Membership
The Committee is comprised of about 16 federal employees nominated by agency heads who, in turn, represent all federal agencies in the Chicago FEB region. Agencies may have back-up members to ensure representation at all meetings. In these cases, it counts as one member for the agency and the pair will act in concert with one vote. No agency holds a permanent seat on the committee. Agency size is not a factor for membership. It is a goal for CSC membership to reflect the variety of types of agencies and locations in the region. Members serve for one year terms, with extensions by agreement of the member’s agency head and the FEB Executive Director. Each year members will sign an agreement to fulfill their Committee participation obligations. The CSC co-chairs are responsible for assessing each member for FEB recognition and continued membership.
Membership on the committee is voluntary by the agency and the individual. As such, members must commit to attending or calling in for at least ¾ of the monthly meetings. Each member will be strongly encouraged to lead or co-lead at least one service or internal committee management project per calendar year. Members are also expected to assist in the other projects, such as volunteering time during a drive, publicizing initiatives, and working with other components of their agencies to maximize the results of each CSC-sponsored event. Members outside of Chicago may replicate events in their geographic area or assist through other ways. An annual minimum of eight hours of participation and event-planning are required to maintain membership.
Structure
The CSC will be led by two co-chairs. The appointment of the co-chairs is approved and supported by the Chicago FEB. The CSC functions at the pleasure of the Chicago FEB Executive Committee, which can request or recommend programs and implement changes it feels would best serve the needs of the Chicago Federal community. The Committee receives guidance, support, and assistance from the Chicago FEB staff.
