OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the Community Service Committee are to enhance community outreach with the public at large by promoting volunteerism and provide a clearinghouse function to direct the federal community to volunteer activities of member departments and agencies. Their initiatives and events include conducting annual blood drives, welfare-to-work clothing drive, collect books for schools, and promote the principal-for-a-day program.

Mission Statement
The Community Service Committee is charged with the responsibility to enhance community outreach with the public-at-large by promoting volunteerism, civic engagement and providing a clearinghouse function to direct the Federal community to volunteer activities of member departments and agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities
The Committee accomplishes its mission by offering opportunities for Federal employees to support local agencies and individuals through various initiatives, including:

Annual Events

  • Blood Drives held on the Federal Plaza from April through October
  • Principal for A Day conducted in collaboration with the Chicago Public Schools and held in October
  • Dress for Success Clothing Drive held annually in October
Volunteer Links

  • The Community Service Committee page on the Chicago FEB website lists numerous web links to national and local service organizations. These agencies provide additional opportunities to Federal employees to offer their time and donations.

Membership
The Committee is comprised of Federal employees nominated by agency heads who, in turn, represent all 178 Federal agencies in the Chicago FEB region.

The Community Service Committee is comprised of Federal employees from nine Federal agencies, including: Internal Revenue Service, Corporation for National and Community Service, Department of Homeland Security, United States Postal Service, Government Accountability Office, Department of Agriculture, Office of Personnel Management, Social Security Administration and the United States Navy.

Structure
In Fiscal Year 2005 the Committee will be lead by two co-chairs, Federal employees representing the Internal Revenue Service and The Corporation for National and Community Service. The appointment of the co-chairs was approved and supported by the Chicago FEB.

The Community Service Committee functions at the pleasure of the Chicago FEB Executive Committee which can request or recommend programs and implement changes it feels would best serve the needs of the Chicago Federal community.

The Committee receives guidance, support and assistance from the Chicago FEB staff.

The committee meets the first Thursday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in Room 3818 of the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building, 230 S. Dearborn, Downtown Chicago.
